Dig IN Gives Me Wings

By Meggie Dials | August 14, 2013

I am not a foodie. In fact, most of the time, I prefer to eat off the children’s menu at restaurants based on my unsophisticated palate. I grew up on Ortega Taco Nights, pizza casserole and tuna pasta. Sometimes, I go weeks without eating a vegetable. I am not a pillar of fine dining or nutrition.

So you may wonder, why would Dig IN, A Taste of Indiana be of interest to me? Well let me tell you: Dig IN gives me wings. Whereas I don’t have the guts to order a foreign-to-my-palate meal at a restaurant, I get all sorts of ballsy at Dig IN. When top chefs from Indiana are standing in front of me with their little masterpiece bite, my feet magically move forward and without hesitation, I eat. Moving from tent to tent in no particular order, I try things I never would have considered before. From bread pudding to gazpacho, I become a food adventurer on Dig IN day. And I have never been disappointed.

The entire day is an opportunity to try new things. Whereas I typically weigh the option of one menu item versus another, at Dig IN, I don’t have to make decisions. Knowing that the food is local and fresh, and prepared by the top chefs from Indiana, even I can’t resist trying it all.

It is one of my favorite days of the year. Standing in White River State Park, looking east at the city that I love, sun shining – just those things alone would make it a fine summer day. But add in the people, the food, the drink, the music and it becomes an extravaganza.

Last year, my friends and I ended our Dig IN day laying in the shade, wine and beer at our side, watching the people navigate the stations. Our bellies were full. And we all felt proud that our city could put on such an incredible food festival that I imagine could rival any across the nation.

On August 25, I’ll be taking my wings back to White River State Park to do it all over again.
